Good Afternoon from the shores of Little Bostwick. Kelsey Leunk here—I am the Overnight Camp Director at Camp Roger. It’s hard to believe that this is the last full day of camp already. It seems like just yesterday we were checking-in and doing our swim challenge. We have a very full day with lots of fun activities!
Sunday is a unique and special day at camp. We started the day by sleeping in until 8:00a.m! After a particularly exciting and busy day
post-campout yesterday, it was a great blessing. We had cereal with cinnamon rolls for breakfast this morning. Along with change in our
schedule today, the campers will have opportunities to spend time with staff members and counselors who aren’t their own. During our Woods and Worship time in the morning we spent time singing camper-requested praise songs together in the lodge- the power of children’s voices echoing “Our God is an Awesome God” is beautiful. Following this, they spent an hour or so exploring God’s creation with a different staff member who has prepared an activity for their group. Red Maple spent time creating their own Frisbee golf course led by Isaac and Silver Birch worked with our Girls Hill Head Counselor, Elena, to decorate the dining room themed for “Roger’s Farm” for our lunchtime celebration. Just to give you a little picture of what that looks like- we’ve got counselors dressed up as a cow, a chicken, and farmers while most staff are wearing hand-made headbands that say “E-I-E-I-(insert name)OOOOO”. Following our yummy tater-tot-casserole and ice cream dessert we will see a plethora of performances by cabin groups, the morning activity of drama, and our counseling staff! This
celebratory Honor’s Banquet is followed by a nice extended bunk time and an afternoon worship service with a guest speaker who has been a
friend of Camp Roger for years- Shanda Sprick.
Following a picnic dinner this evening we are going to have our largest campfire of the week—Honor’s campfire. Counselor Peyton will lead us as we spend time honoring our awesome God, honoring the campers who have made it through a week at camp, and of course, having fun! I can’t wait to hear highlights from each cabin, sing some songs, watch hilarious skits and praise God for all he has given for us.
As a blessing for our campers and staff we will follow our devotions with a time of singing called “Serenade”. We praise God loudly with
the voices of our staff by circling up on boys hill and on girls hill—this helps us wrap this week with a powerful reminder of the
reason we are all here! We are thankful for the continued support and prayers as we encounter and celebrate God’s love for His children
through relationships and experiences in His world!
We will continue to Honor and serve God here at camp and as many of our summer staff will journey to different places tomorrow, we will
look back on this week and our summer with fond memories as changed individuals. God moves powerfully in this place as he teaches us to love and celebrate with faith like his children. These shared experiences, relationships, challenges, and blessings we have encountered inevitably have changed us- I ask that you pray with me for our campers and staff that they will continue to have this faith and to feel God’s love wherever God leads them.
