The History of Camp Scottie

Founded in 1975 by the Osterink family, Camp Scottie has served as a vibrant place of ministry for greater West Michigan for over 40 years. In partnership with Eastminster Presbyterian Church of Grand Rapids, Camp Scottie served youth groups, church groups, boy scouts, and many others throughout its history to build relationships and the faith of participants. Through experiences in nature, camp participants experienced the love of God and grew healthy relationships. The 85-acre property includes an outdoor chapel, running stream and swimming pond, a 40-person retreat center with full kitchen and gathering space for dining and recreation, a “shelter house” to gather in small groups, and several hiking trails to accent the natural beauty of Camp Scottie.

Over the past 5 years, the Osterink family has been prayerfully discerning the future of Camp Scottie and seeking out the right partner to steward Camp Scottie and ensure its’ use for kingdom purposes for the next season of ministry in Howard City. During this time, several renovations and improvement projects were started in an effort to prepare Camp Scottie for the next chapter of ministry. In December of 2014, conversations began between Camp Roger and Camp Scottie to dream of a partnership to expand the ministry of Camp Roger and ensure the vitality of Camp Scottie for the foreseeable future. In the fall of 2015, Camp Scottie officially became part of Camp Roger as an extension and expansion of its mission.

Camp Scottie

Camp Scottie officially reopened in the fall of 2016 after a season of renovations to update and complete the facility improvements to the beautiful 85-acre property. Camp Scottie is located in beautiful Howard City, just 33 minutes north of downtown Grand Rapids. The property includes:

Tamarack Lodge

The Tamarack Lodge includes sleeping accommodations for 40 people, restroom and shower facilities, a full-service kitchen, a dining room for shared meals, a living room for small and large group meetings and fellowship, and a beautiful fireplace as a centerpiece.

Creekside Center

This three-season space accommodates small and medium size groups up to 40 for hosting events, gatherings, and programs. Including restroom facilities and a beautiful fireplace, the Creekside Center is a quality place to gather with your family reunion, church group, youth group, or school event.

Outside Chapel

Nestled in the woods, the Outdoor Chapel at Camp Scottie provides the perfect worship setting for groups up to 100 people. With rustic benches, the chapel will provide your group a great place to worship God, share in large and small groups, and grow in faith and relationships.

Stream and Swimming Pond

Camp Scottie is blessed to have Tamarack Creek running through the property, giving it a beautiful backdrop for hiking, nature walks, and enjoying God’s creation. In addition, the swimming pond offers groups a chance to swim and enjoy water activities.

Day Camp

We are currently working on the Day Camp program for Camp Scottie that will launch its second season in the summer of 2018. We have built a high quality Day Camp that serves kids from West Michigan and provides great summer experiences that help kids encounter and celebrate God’s love through relationships and experiences in creation, and we are excited to see it in action again this summer.

RV/Campsites in 2017

In 2018, Camp Scottie will have several group camping and RV sites to expand the accommodations of camp for church groups, school groups, organizations, and family reunions. The goal is to provide water and electrical hook-ups for the RV sites and water access for the camping sites in close proximity to restrooms in the Creekside Center. We are still working through the details of the Group Camping and RV Site accommodations and will communicate the specific plans as they become clear.

Outdoor Education

We have expanded the Camp Roger Outdoor Education program that has been growing over the past 15 years at Camp Scottie. It includes several “new to Camp Roger” natural resources and ecosystems to explore and study with school groups and organizations. We are excited to be exploring these learning opportunities and being a resource for the surrounding schools and organizations of Camp Scottie.
