Camp Roger and Camp Scottie place a top priority on your student's safety. Throughout every program, we focus on three main areas: high screening standards for employees and volunteers, certification requirements, and reporting/response.
- Screening Standards for Full-Time, Part-Time and Volunteer Employees:
We believe that detailed screening standards are vital in preventing the abuse of children. Because of this, our Safe Camp policies and hiring processes intentionally exceed national safety standards. These policies and procedures include completion of the following:
• An extensive and detailed application
• An initial first-round interview with two Camp directors
• Three references and one self-reference
• State criminal background check
• National Sex Offender background check
• Voluntary disclosure statement
• Read and sign Camp Roger’s Community Covenant
• Focused training for all summer staff counselors on safety and emergency procedures, Safe Camp policies, child abuse detection and prevention, mandated reporting, behavior management techniques, community team building, and Camp Roger's mission
- Certification & Licensing Requirements for Camp Roger and Camp Scottie:
• Inspected and licensed by the State of Michigan
• Member of Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA)
• Each high adventure activity follows the standards of and is inspected by Great Lakes Adventures
• Every lifeguard and waterfront director is required to be certified by the American Red Cross in CPR/First Aid and water emergency procedures
- Camper Safety Policies:
• Counselors and staff must follow the 2-1 rule when with campers. Counselors, staff, and volunteers are never to be alone with campers. Counselors are trained in the boundaries for appropriate physical interactions with children (handshakes, holding younger camper’s hands, and high fives) and are restricted from any suspicious behavior.
• Harassment of any kind is not allowed at Camp. We are committed to an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Expectations around behavior to others and bullying is discussed with all campers on the first day of each session.
• Lifejackets are required for any boating activity and to jump off the rope swing. Certified lifeguards are required to be on duty at the waterfront throughout these activities.
• A helmet and harness are required for all climbing tower or ropes course activities. An orientation to equipment and procedures is required for all participants.
• Counselors will be alert to the mental and physical health of each individual camper in their cabin throughout the session, working with the camp nurse or health officer regarding any illness or injury that needs treatment.
